- Sending a formal application to Froogle to accept your text file feed
- Including relevant product information in your data feed including for optional data fields like brand or ISBN
- Coherence between the first heading and sentence level copy on your page and with the product on that sales page
- Right positioning of your product picture
- Ensure the correct keywords are in the page title and in page links
- Writing effective titles and descriptions
- Keeping your description short and keyword rich
- Shorter description leads to a better positioning
- While naming your image file like alt tags, the image should use the primary product keyword in its naming convention

Thanks for the details in this post, Natalie. I don't doubt that there is much advantage to retailers in having their products listed in Froogle. But this actually seems to be representative of an imbalance -- one that sees the purchaser with less incentive to use Froogle than the seller.
Searching for simple items in Froogle can be frustrating as one knows that many purchasing options must exist, but the retailers may not have submitted their feeds to Froogle. I wish there was a way of auto-discovering the product data on store websites rather than requiring store managers to submit their own data.
Here's a quick demonstration to show why Froogle's not working as well for consumers:
